Combine the PADI Divemaster qualification with practical skills to make a real difference in the fight to save our precious ecosystems.
The Takata Reef Monitor Training is an intensive technical program that will prepare you for a career in marine biology in tropical areas. With this training, you will learn about marine biology and ecology, fish, corals, benthos and megafauna of the Caribbean. During the course, you will learn how to identify and monitor the species found in our reef and analyze the data collected.
Learn how to study the health of the reef and help us find ways to reconcile the expansion of coastal villages with the preservation of the region’s amazing natural heritage.
About the course
This immersive and technical course is designed for individuals looking to combine the PADI Divemaster qualification with practical field experience, making a tangible impact in preserving marine ecosystems.
This intensive training equips you with the knowledge and skills to work in marine biology and conservation within tropical reef environments. You will develop expertise in marine ecology, fish and coral identification, benthos, and megafauna of the Caribbean, learning to monitor and analyze reef health effectively.
With a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on diving sessions, participants will gain firsthand experience in scientific reef monitoring methodologies. Our Research Center follows AGRRA (Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment) protocols, widely used across the Caribbean for effective reef conservation and management. By the end of the course, you will be proficient in surveying and data collection techniques, contributing to ongoing marine conservation efforts.
Course content
The content of the program is inspired by the Reef Monitoring Program of our Research Center. It consists of 40 hours of activities (classroom and dives) divided into four modules:
- Fish and Megafauna Identification: Fish Species Families and Importance of Fish in the Marine Ecosystem.
- Coral Identification: Coral Families, Importance, Coral Conditions (Diseases, Mortality, Bleaching)
- Benthos identification: Types of benthos in the Caribbean and importance in the marine ecosystem.
- Monitoring training: monitoring methods (fish, megafauna, corals and benthos), monitoring equipment, site selection, transect overview, data analysis.
Course requirements
- Rescue diver or equivalent with at least 40 loggeddives.
